Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade, driven by EIP-8037, introduces state gas charges for new account creation while maintaining the standard 21,000 gas for transfers to existing addresses. The Ethereum Foundation warned on August 17, 2026 that wallets and tools relying on a single-dimensional gas model will malfunction. The Platåberget testnet launched on August 20, 2026, giving developers three days to adapt their systems. This upgrade marks the first fundamental change to the flat 21,000 gas assumption since the network launched in 2015.
