Consensys announced on September 9, 2026, that MetaMask is becoming a fully independent entity, marking the end of its integration with the group since its creation in 2014 by Joe Lubin. The crypto wallet, which has over 100 million downloads in approximately 190 countries and has facilitated several trillion dollars in transactions, is transforming into a neobank with multi-asset accounts, a Mastercard debit card, and perpetual contracts. Joe Lubin takes over as CEO of MetaMask while remaining executive chairman of Consensys, whose institutional and infrastructural activities on Ethereum and Linea will be led by Mike Kriak. The new MetaMask entity is targeting a stock market listing as early as beginning 2027, after the SEC dismissed without action the case accusing it of selling unregistered securities, with the separation to be completed by the end of 2026.
