Escaping Jack Dorsey’s BTC miners cost $41.9 million

Data center operator Core Scientific paid Jack Dorsey’s Block at least $67.9 million for BTC mining chips. To exit its purchase obligations, the company recorded a $41.9 million loss. Core Scientific paid $10 million in July 2024, $21.3 million in January 2025, and $36.6 million in January 2026 before terminating the contract. This decision is part of a major strategic shift: Core Scientific signed 15-year leases covering 529 megawatts, primarily with AMD, projected to generate over $14 billion in contracted revenue. Block wound down its TBD mining unit in November 2024, just months after unveiling its Proto Rig miner at Core Scientific’s facility.
