End of Lifetime RSA? Proposal by a Macronist Lawmaker Sparks Debate

Share

Deputy Guillaume Kasbarian, a member of the Ensemble for the Republic group, proposes progressively reducing the RSA until it is eliminated after five years. His amendment, rejected on Wednesday, projected savings of 2 billion euros in 2027, 4 billion in 2028 and more than 8 billion in the long term, based on estimates that are not guaranteed. The current RSA is not paid for life: eligibility is regularly reassessed based on income, but there is no five-year limit on how long it can be received. The reform is controversial, with supporters claiming it will encourage employment and opponents warning that it could increase hardship for people who are long-term excluded from the labour market.
