Empire Market Co-Creator Sentenced to 40 Years Over $430M Dark Web Bazaar

Raheim Hamilton, 30, from Suffolk, Virginia, was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison and fined $5 million for co-creating and operating darknet marketplace Empire Market. Between 2018 and 2020, the platform facilitated more than four million transactions worth over $430 million, including nearly $375 million in drug sales totaling 13.3 kilograms of fentanyl, 447 kilograms of cocaine and 103 kilograms of heroin. Hamilton agreed to forfeit approximately 1,230 BTC and 24.4 ETH, as well as three properties in Virginia. His associate Thomas Pavey, who pleaded guilty and agreed to forfeit roughly 1,584 BTC, gold bars, vehicles and real estate properties, is due to be sentenced later this month.
