El Salvador’s Bitcoin reserve is currently valued at $618 million, with holdings of between 7,760 and 7,792 BTC as of late September and early October 2026. These holdings have increased by over 1,700 BTC since the IMF program began in February 2025, when the country held approximately 5,968 to 6,070 BTC. The IMF approved a $1.4 billion Extended Fund Facility with conditions limiting public-sector Bitcoin accumulation. The October 2026 review found that Bitcoin purchased since June 2025 came from private donations rather than government funds, which waived the accumulation limits for those coins. The state-linked Chivo digital wallet has been transferred to a private operator in compliance with El Salvador’s IMF commitments.
