El Salvador Agrees to Halt Further Bitcoin Accumulation Under IMF Deal

The International Monetary Fund completed its second and third reviews of El Salvador’s program, authorizing an immediate disbursement of SDR 101.96 million, approximately $138 million. El Salvador secured a waiver for a missed Bitcoin accumulation performance criterion and committed to no further accumulation beyond documented donations. The 40-month Extended Fund Facility, approved on February 26, 2025, provides total access of about $1.4 billion and also formalized the transfer of majority ownership of Chivo to a private operator. Real GDP growth is estimated at 3.9% for 2025 and projected at 4.5% for 2026, with gross international reserves projected to reach $5.346 billion in 2026.
