Effective altruism is back with an ‘anti AI’ campaign

Irreplaceable, an organization linked to effective altruism, has been paying $2,000 per week since August to fund a media campaign against AI presented as grassroots. The organization is recruiting students to organize protests at more than 100 universities in October to demand an AI pause and its placement under public control. Critics call this initiative astroturfing, noting the historical ties between effective altruism and the crypto industry, particularly through Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX. Irreplaceable’s privacy page does not disclose its funders, although Jeremy Ornstein has been identified as an Irreplaceable strategist who simultaneously works at the Center for AI Safety.
