US President Donald Trump has moved to impose 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, including wine, cement, and hockey sticks, after trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed. Energy and potash, two of Canada’s most critical exports to the US, were notably exempted from these measures to avoid spiking American heating bills or fertilizer costs. Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc led intensive discussions in Washington but failed to reach a deal. These tariffs represent an effective impact of roughly 2.5 percentage points on overall Canadian exports and far exceed the 25% steel and aluminum tariffs imposed during Trump’s first term.
