Democrats won control of the US House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, securing both chambers of Congress. The party gained seats in districts where Donald Trump had defeated his Democratic opponent by as much as 18 percentage points in 2024, and flipped at least seven Senate seats in Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. From January 2027, Democratic committee leaders will have greater influence over legislation and oversight, including issuing subpoenas and investigating the Trump administration, the president’s family and their business interests. The result could reshape the outlook for crypto legislation and bring greater congressional scrutiny of Trump-linked digital asset businesses, according to the Associated Press. Affordability, including high energy costs and renewed interest-rate increases, was identified as a defining issue of the election.
