David Sacks, the White House’s top AI advisor, criticized OpenAI and Anthropic on September 13 for backing the « Pace The Frontier » movement, which advocates slowing the development of frontier AI systems. The initiative, launched on July 28 as an open letter, gathered over 1,300 signatures from employees at Google DeepMind, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Sacks describes this effort as textbook regulatory capture, arguing it would allow dominant market players to lock in their competitive advantage. He also noted that China would likely not participate in any international agreement to slow AI development, rendering the initiative potentially self-defeating from a national competitiveness standpoint.
