David Sacks advocates for AI companies to fund grid upgrades, promising lower electricity bills

David Sacks, former White House AI and Crypto Czar, is advocating for major tech companies to finance grid modernization needed for their data centers rather than passing costs to families. On March 5, 2026, he launched the Ratepayer Protection Pledge, signed by Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and xAI. These companies commit to covering the costs of new power generation and remaining liable for any capacity built but unused. AI infrastructure investment is projected to grow from $800 billion in 2026 to $1.4 trillion in 2027. Sacks claims excess electricity from data centers can be sold back to the grid at competitive prices, potentially lowering rates for local communities.
