Data center construction in America hits record $75B pace as homes and offices stall

US data center construction spending hit a record 75 billion dollars at a seasonally adjusted annual rate in July 2026, representing roughly a 57% jump from a year earlier. Meanwhile, residential and traditional office construction continued to decline, with overall private construction down 0.5% from the prior month. Hyperscalers including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta have signaled capital expenditure plans in the hundreds of billions of dollars annually to support AI workloads. In Texas alone, over 1,800 data center interconnection requests have been filed with a total projected capacity exceeding 474 gigawatts, while the entire US electrical grid has only around 1,300 gigawatts of installed generating capacity.
