The Danish government announced that approximately 8.8 million individuals had their personal data compromised in the central population register. Intruders hijacked the legal access of a private company to retrieve names, addresses, and CPR numbers without breaching any system. The figure exceeds the country’s population of roughly 6 million, as the register also includes deceased persons and those living abroad. Authorities have revoked the access of the company involved and alerted the data protection authority. The minister responsible for digital affairs described the incident as deeply serious and ordered a comprehensive security review of the system established in 1968.
