Customs and Border Protection tapped 80,000 Flock cameras last year — police weren’t kept in the loop

A Washington Post investigation revealed that U.S. Customs and Border Protection accessed more than 80,000 Flock cameras in 2025 during an undisclosed nationwide vehicle-tracking pilot. The investigation identified at least 50 officers accused of misusing these automated license plate readers, including 26 who surveilled current or former romantic partners. In May 2025, a Texas sheriff’s office searched more than 83,000 cameras for a woman who had self-managed an abortion, raising Fourth Amendment constitutional concerns. Federal agencies like ICE also accessed campus camera data without campus officials’ knowledge, illustrating the platform’s oversight failures.
