Michael Egorov, founder of Curve Finance and Yield Basis, attributes the theft of $6.36 billion from Binance wallets to a likely compromise of the exchange’s hot wallet signing infrastructure. According to TRM Labs, the breach would be the largest cryptocurrency theft ever recorded. Binance says its preliminary investigation found no evidence of a private key leak, pledged to cover all customer losses and reported that approximately $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen with industry assistance. Egorov argues that decentralized protocols without privileged access to customer funds reduce this type of risk, although they remain exposed to smart contract bugs and other technical failures. He also recommends that Bitcoin holders prioritize self custody through hardware wallets, while acknowledging that such devices are not immune to supply-chain and data-leak threats.
