The French government is considering reopening a tax regularization window in 2027, inspired by the Service de traitement des declarations rectificatives (STDR) from 2013-2017 which collected approximately 8 billion euros. Holders of undeclared cryptocurrencies could benefit from reduced penalties, while current sanctions include fines of up to 1500 euros per account and an 80% surcharge on tax reassessments. The European DAC8 directive, in force since January 1, 2026, will strengthen controls through the exchange of crypto transaction data between tax authorities from 2027. A tax lawyer advises preparing a regularization file now rather than waiting until 2027, as the future scheme remains uncertain and a tax audit could be initiated in the meantime.
