Crypto kidnapping in Juilly: the attackers targeted 660 bitcoins, but the family owned just 0.066

On February 6, four or five masked men broke into a home in Juilly, Seine-et-Marne, and assaulted a father, mother and their daughter to steal their cryptocurrencies. The crew, directed by phone, had deduced from a compromised tax return that the family held 660 bitcoins, worth about 40 million euros, when a misplaced decimal point actually indicated 0.066 bitcoin. The accounts targeted held only around 10,000 euros, which was never collected, and the three victims suffered injuries requiring 36, 16 and 10 days off work respectively. The Meaux court sentenced two young men from northern France to three years in prison and 18 months in prison, while the mastermind and the other attackers have not been tried. France’s National Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office had recorded 135 cryptocurrency-related kidnappings since 2023, with 88 people indicted and 75 held in pretrial detention.
