Brian Armstrong, Coinbase CEO, believes stablecoins and artificial intelligence will transform how consumers pay for online content. He says the x402 protocol, introduced by Coinbase in May 2025, will make micropayments easier and reduce checkout friction. An AI agent could automatically purchase a specific article, for example for $0.25, instead of requiring the user to sign up for a monthly subscription. Coinbase partnered with Amazon Web Services in June to enable publishers using its services to monetize AI agent requests through x402, while Cloudflare launched a monetization gateway in closed beta in September.
