Crude awakening: The White House’s oil numbers don’t add up

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright claimed that more than 17 million barrels of oil flowed through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, exceeding pre-Iran conflict levels. According to Samir Madani, co-founder of TankerTrackers.com, these figures are misleading: in reality, only 9.14 million barrels exited the Arabian Sea on Monday, including all routes. Madani calls this calculation method ‘mathemagics,’ as it aggregates transfers spanning multiple days into a single day. This discrepancy explains why oil has remained above $95 per barrel.
