Coinbase teases Pokémon card packs backed by physical collectibles

Share

Coinbase announced a feature allowing users to open digital Pokémon card packs, with each virtual card backed by a real physical card stored in a vault. After the digital reveal, users can either keep the card in secure storage or have it shipped to their doorstep. This initiative follows Coinbase Wallet’s integration with Courtyard in May 2024, a platform using Brink’s services for physical card storage. The Pokémon card market has reached valuations in the billions of dollars, with rare cards like a first edition holographic Charizard selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Tokenizing these cards addresses authentication, storage, and liquidity challenges that plague this traditional market. No launch date or pricing details have been disclosed at this stage.
