Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced that the platform is building payment infrastructure dedicated to artificial intelligence. Coinbase for Agents will enable AI models to have their own isolated bank account with user-defined spending limits and maximum transaction sizes. This initiative came after Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson requested an « agentic bank » allowing machines to manage money autonomously. Coinbase cut approximately 14% of its workforce in 2026, around 700 employees, replacing them with AI-native pods, and plans to launch the x402 protocol for automated micro-payments in USDC. Armstrong’s stated goal is to build infrastructure for a world where robots conduct more transactions than humans.
