Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has acquired IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio to strengthen its enterprise blockchain capabilities and protect its digital asset ecosystem. IBM had filed over 500 blockchain-related patents during its peak years in 2018 and 2019, covering areas such as consensus mechanisms and supply chain solutions. The financial terms of the acquisition have not been publicly disclosed. Circle also joined the LOT Network in 2023 and 2025, a collaborative defensive network spanning more than 3.8 million patents and 2,800 members, including IBM and Circle.
