Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday responded to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s claim that Canada blew up trade talks for political reasons. Carney insisted that Canada always stood up for its best interests and accused the United States of shifting its positions on several key issues during the negotiations. Trade talks collapsed last month after failing to reach a deal before Trump’s August 22 deadline for new 50% tariffs on some $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. Canada has retaliated with dollar-for-dollar tariffs on U.S. goods, set to take effect next week.
