Cardano has achieved native integration into the open x402 payments protocol after contributions from Cardano Foundation engineers. This integration brings Cardano support into the protocol’s reference tooling, including client, server, and facilitator components as well as working examples covering Cardano mainnet, preprod, and preview networks. This inclusion in the official x402 codebase substantially lowers the barrier for developers wanting to use Cardano as a settlement network, while facilitating interoperability with other blockchain networks. The x402 protocol, originally developed by Coinbase, leverages the HTTP 402 status code to enable applications and autonomous AI agents to pay for digital services. The x402 Foundation launched in July with support from dozens of organizations, including Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe and Visa.
