Canada says trade deal with US is very close, more work needed

Canada and the United States appear close to a trade agreement after more than three hours of negotiations in Washington between Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The proposed deal would halve US tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum while lowering duties on automobiles, averting a 50% tariff that would have affected between 20 and 30 billion dollars worth of Canadian exports. President Donald Trump announced a three-day pause on tariffs originally scheduled for August 19-20, and the Canadian dollar has risen to its highest level in nearly three months on trade optimism. Dominic LeBlanc however noted that while a deal is very close, more work remains to be done.
