Brave retools its search engine for AI agents and plans a BAT overhaul

Brave unveiled BAT Roadmap 4.0 on July 9, 2026, aiming to transform the Basic Attention Token into the engine of a transactional attention economy for autonomous machine payments. The platform is rebuilding its search infrastructure for AI agents and large language models, with the LLM Context API designed to handle millions of daily queries and an index covering over 40 billion pages. The ecosystem relies on x402 and MPP protocols for machine transactions, BravePay for stablecoin privacy, and a Creator Contribution Protocol to compensate creators whose content is used by AI. With over 120 million monthly active users and 51 million daily active users as of mid-2026, Brave will gradually phase out ad units paying out in BAT by the end of 2026, replacing them with a buyback mechanism funded by revenue from new products. Observers should monitor the launch timing of BravePay and the Rewards Card, as well as the adoption of autonomous payment protocols by AI platforms.
