Blockchain: Solana Tests Alpenglow and Targets 150-Millisecond Finality

Share

Solana has launched tests for Alpenglow, a consensus overhaul that could reduce transaction finality from 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds. Developed by Anza, the new protocol replaces TowerBFT and Proof of History with two mechanisms: Votor for validator voting and Rotor for block diffusion. Validator votes will now circulate off-chain, freeing up block space for user transactions. The network maintains 20+20 resilience, tolerating 20% malicious stake and an additional 20% offline, with over 98% validator approval. For reference, Ethereum requires 12.8 minutes and Bitcoin approximately one hour to finalize a transaction.
