Blockchain Association urges SEC and CFTC to coordinate on equity perpetuals

The Blockchain Association filed formal comments on August 25 urging the SEC and CFTC to build a joint regulatory framework for equity perpetuals, derivatives that function like futures but never expire. These products generate over $480 billion in trading volume on offshore venues but remain effectively banned from US markets due to a jurisdictional gap between the two agencies. The Association proposes adapting their existing joint security futures framework and calls for a technology-neutral, outcomes-based approach to regulation. Coinbase and the Hyperliquid Policy Center also submitted similar comments, creating a united industry front on this issue. The CFTC has already signaled some willingness to move toward certain types of perpetual contracts.
