Bittensor adds quantum-resistant wallet support with new digital signatures

Share

The Opentensor Foundation is rolling out three post-quantum signing algorithms to secure TAO transfers, staking and validator operations on the Subtensor blockchain. The code was merged into the release-487 development branch on October 27, 2026, but the feature was not yet live on the main network, which was running runtime 486 when it was announced on November 6. The proposed algorithms are ML-DSA-65, Falcon-512 and Falcon-1024, ranging from a signing speed of about 0.521 milliseconds for the former to a security level of 5 for the latter. The update does not change TAO supply, emissions or rewards, and wallets using the classical Sr25519 or Ed25519 schemes do not need to migrate. Holders and validators interested in activating automatic signing-key rotation, which requires a one-time lock of 0.2 TAO, must wait for the release-487 runtime to be deployed on the main network.
