Bitdefender warned on August 6 that pirated copies of the upcoming 2026 film The Odyssey are being used to distribute Lumma Stealer malware, an information-stealer that targets crypto wallets, saved passwords, payment data, and browser session cookies. The malicious files are disguised as high-resolution video downloads with .exe extensions and icons mimicking VLC Media Player to deceive users. This malware is particularly dangerous for cryptocurrency holders because it can steal session cookies and bypass two-factor authentication on exchange platforms. In May 2025, authorities neutralized approximately 2,300 domains associated with this infrastructure, but the malware resurfaced with new distribution vectors. Browser wallets such as MetaMask and Phantom are primary targets of this operation running on a malware-as-a-service model.
