Bitcoin’s 7 million coin quantum problem just reached the US Treasury

The US Treasury launched its Quantum-Readiness Task Force on Aug. 24, including a workstream dedicated to digital assets and emerging-technology risks. This initiative creates a public-private forum to assess cryptographic dependencies and plan migration to quantum-safe technologies. Approximately 7 million Bitcoin are considered potentially vulnerable due to exposed public keys through older address formats or address reuse. The Bitcoin Security Consortium, bringing together BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy and six other institutions, pledged $15 million over three years to support Bitcoin security research, with post-quantum cryptography among its initial priorities. Treasury did not set any migration deadline for the private sector, leaving technical and governance decisions to individual networks.
