Riot Platforms repaid its $200 million Bitcoin-backed loan seven months ahead of schedule on September 21, freeing 5,821 BTC that had been pledged as collateral with Coinbase. The early repayment eliminates approximately $12 million in annual interest expenses at a fixed rate of 6.15 percent, with the loan originally due in April 2027. This deleveraging comes one month after Riot signed a 20-year lease for 191 megawatts at its Rockdale campus, totaling $9.1 billion with Anthropic, OpenAI’s rival. The company plans to deliver 96 megawatts by December 2027 and the full capacity by June 2028. This long-term rental model between Bitcoin miners and AI laboratories is becoming increasingly common in the industry.
