Bitcoin miners’ AI pipelines are on trial as Texas freezes 474 GW of data center requests

Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered an audit of roughly 474 GW in pending data center grid connection requests, more than five times the grid’s record peak load. Only 28 of 377 companies contacted responded to the public utility commission’s survey about their data center plans. Hut 8, IREN and Riot hold the most advanced assets with financed, contracted sites already under construction, while many projects remain exposed to approval delays and funding risk. FERC extended this logic nationally on June 18, ordering six regional grid operators to justify their rules for large-load customers. Goldman Sachs forecasts US data center power demand rising from 31 GW in 2025 to 66 GW in 2027.
