Bitcoin in Danger? The 5 Mathematical Puzzles That Raise Concerns

Share

Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, raised concerns about artificial intelligence potentially breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography by recovering a private key from a public key. Rob Hamilton, in collaboration with Fundamentals from the Magic Internet Math podcast, presented five mathematical approaches that could theoretically achieve this, each currently requiring approximately 2 to the power of 128 operations, an astronomical amount of calculations. None of these approaches has successfully compromised the network’s cryptography to date, and researcher Ayan Mahalanobis himself acknowledged that his matrix method does not outperform classical techniques. The secp256k1 elliptic curve used by Bitcoin shows no exploitable weakness at this stage, and the risk of a concrete threat remains purely theoretical.
