A hacker stole approximately 4,000 BTC from Liquid Network, a Bitcoin sidechain developed by Blockstream, by exploiting a cache bug in the range-proof verification of Elements software. The attacker returned 3,400 BTC to the federation, keeping 598 BTC, worth nearly 47 million dollars, as an implicit commission. Blockstream fixed the bug and patched its nodes before the attacker, who presented himself as a whitehat, returned the funds. The Liquid Network sidechain remains shut down with no announced timeline for resumption, and bitcoin barely moved, falling just 0.5% to around 79,500 dollars at the time of the events.
