Binance suffered a major security incident on October 29, with estimated unauthorized outflows of approximately $6.3 billion across multiple blockchains. The exchange’s preliminary investigation points to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, although no evidence of a private-key leak has yet been found. Tether froze more than $1.567 billion in USDT and Circle froze over $800 million in USDC, while Binance’s reported frozen total approached $3 billion. The exchange suspended deposits and withdrawals, covered losses through its SAFU fund and company resources, and Bitcoin briefly fell to $76,300, triggering nearly $478.9 million in liquidations. Investigator ZachXBT linked funds stolen from Binance with those taken in the Bitget exploit, suggesting that the same attacker carried out both attacks after routing the proceeds through THORChain.
