China added more power-generation capacity between 2022 and 2025 than the entire US grid. To leverage this cheap energy, it is implementing the “East Data, West Computing” program, which involves relocating data centers to western regions rich in renewable energy. Eight national computing hubs and 10 data-center clusters have been established, with new facilities required to source over 80% of their electricity from clean sources. Data centers currently account for about 1.68% of China’s electricity consumption, a share projected to reach 3% by 2030. Challenges remain: the intermittency of solar and wind energy, insufficient transmission infrastructure, and the distance from end users in the country’s east.
