The collaboration between Base, Coinbase’s Layer 2 network, and Ethereum core developers to unify account abstraction proposals has broken down. Base will now advance EIP-8130 independently while Ethereum Layer 1 pursues EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions), creating two parallel standards. Account abstraction enables key features such as gas fee sponsoring, transaction batching, and passkey-based authentication. Both proposals share similar goals but reflect divergent priorities: censorship resistance and post-quantum security for L1 versus scalability and cost reduction for L2. Base’s EIP-8130 claims a reduction of up to 63% in gas costs compared to the current ERC-4337 approach.
