Australia punches way above its weight in Claude AI usage, and it’s not for the reasons you’d expect

Australia registers a per-capita Claude AI usage index of up to 6.4 times what its population would predict, ranking first globally among 121 countries tracked. Unlike the global trend, software development accounts for only 8.32% of Australian conversations, well below the 11.51% worldwide average, with users favoring homework help and business management instead. Approximately 54.5% of Australian exchanges fall under « augmentation, » meaning users collaborate with the AI rather than fully delegating tasks, exceeding the global average of 51.4%. By global traffic share, Australia grew from 1.6% of Claude.ai usage in early 2026 to 2.65% by May 2026. Two states alone, New South Wales and Victoria, generate roughly 68% of Australia’s total traffic on the platform.
