AT&T taps OpenAI to power its in-house legal team

Share

AT&T has announced a partnership with OpenAI to equip its internal legal team with artificial intelligence tools, including chatbots and agents. This collaboration builds on LegalEdge, the in-house law firm launched by the telecom group in January 2026, which employs approximately 38 legal professionals. AT&T has already shifted thousands of hours of work traditionally handled by external firms to its internal team during 2026. General Counsel David McAtee stated that the company plans to reduce its roster of national law firms from approximately 30 to 18-20 over the next two years. The main goal of this partnership is to leverage AT&T’s institutional memory, comprising more than a century of accumulated legal knowledge, by making this expertise more accessible and usable.
