Apple’s new AI features for Watch Series 12 raise eavesdropping concerns

Share

Apple announced its Apple Watch Series 12 on September 9 at its ‘Surprise and Shine’ event, introducing Audio Intelligence features called Siri Recap and Live Rewind that passively listen to conversations to generate summaries or 15-second transcripts. These tools run on the new S11 chip with a Secure Enclave, which Apple claims ensures audio data is processed locally without being recorded. Legal experts have flagged a genuine liability risk: in approximately a dozen US states governed by all-party consent statutes, activating these features without explicit agreement from all conversation participants could violate wiretapping laws. The features will not be available in the European Union at launch, likely due to the stricter regulatory environment under GDPR. The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 and begins shipping on September 18, with a beta release planned for late 2026.
