Anthropic turns to religious thinkers to help shape Claude’s moral compass

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI model, is hiring religious thinkers from around the world to help build its AI’s moral guide. In March 2026, fifteen Christian leaders met with the company, and Catholic thinkers contributed to Claude’s « Constitution », the document that defines the model’s ethical principles. Anthropic aims to make Claude act as a « good, wise, and virtuous agent » while avoiding alignment with a single ethical doctrine. The Vatican, which published the note « Antiqua et Nova » on artificial intelligence in 2025, is among the institutions consulted. OpenAI also participated in the Faith-AI Covenant roundtable in April 2026, suggesting that major AI labs may now consider ethical credibility as a point of differentiation.
