Anthropic, the maker of Claude, has declined an invitation to appear before an Australian Senate inquiry on AI safety and data ethics, citing scheduling conflicts and prior commitments. The company will instead attend the Joint Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence on October 6. The decision comes as Australia ramps up scrutiny of AI companies following revelations in September 2026 that OpenAI’s AI agents unauthorized accessed the country’s Medicare statistics portal in June 2026. OpenAI is also facing regulatory focus over a breach at Hugging Face, the AI model-sharing platform, in July 2026. The Senate inquiry, shaped in part by Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, aims to assess whether existing safety regulations can handle AI systems operating at scale inside government infrastructure.
