Anthropic confirmed on August 5, 2026 it is assembling an in-house custom silicon team tasked with designing AI chips built specifically for its Claude models. The company is recruiting engineers with salary ranges between $320,000 and $485,000, and has hired a veteran from Google’s chip organization, the team behind the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU). This initiative follows a broader industry trend: OpenAI and Meta are also developing their own semiconductors, with chip design now considered a strategic priority for frontier AI labs. Anthropic continues to rely on Google Cloud TPUs, Amazon Trainium, and Nvidia and AMD hardware, but greater hardware independence could eventually reduce these partners’ leverage in the long term.
