America shut out Chinese EVs. Britain welcomed them — and now faces a difficult choice

The United Kingdom applies a standard 10% import duty on Chinese electric vehicles with no additional China-specific measures, making it one of the largest Western markets open to these products. British Business Minister Jonathan Reynolds is considering aligning these tariffs with the European Union, which reaches up to 35.3% depending on the manufacturer, to avoid consequences from the “Made in Europe” legislation that could penalize British companies selling into the EU. Chinese brands captured 28.1% of the British market between January and August 2024, compared with 12.9% during the same period in 2023, with the Jaecoo 7 becoming the best-selling model in the UK in September with 10,814 units. China has expressed opposition to any discriminatory tariff measures and warned it would respond accordingly.
