Amazon’s Zoox to launch paid robotaxi service in Las Vegas on Aug. 10

Amazon-owned Zoox will launch paid robotaxi rides in Las Vegas starting August 10, marking its first commercial launch as it seeks to compete with Alphabet’s Waymo. In July, federal regulators granted Zoox a temporary exemption from rules requiring human controls, clearing the way for charging fares. Since launching its free service last year, Zoox has transported nearly one million riders across Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin and Miami. Fares will be calculated from a base price plus distance and time traveled, with potential additional fees for trips to certain destinations like airports. The company will need to obtain state and local approvals to expand paid service beyond Las Vegas.
