Google has appointed Koray Kavukcuoglu to lead DeepMind as Demis Hassabis steps back from daily operations to focus on AGI strategy and scientific research. Hassabis, winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing AlphaFold, moves into the roles of Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. Kavukcuoglu, the longtime CTO, takes over operational leadership of generative AI model development. In July 2026, Hassabis called for the establishment of a US-led international standards body to evaluate advanced AI models. He also reaffirmed that AGI requires additional scientific breakthroughs and remains years away.
