Amazon announced Thursday a plan to expand its drone delivery service to suburban areas in nearly 500 U.S. cities. Customers could receive packages in as fast as 30 minutes, with drones capable of carrying items weighing up to 5 pounds. This expansion would represent more than a sixfold increase in current drone delivery operations, including the Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland and Boise metro areas. The service will be free for Prime members ordering more than $50 worth of goods, but cost $2.99 for smaller orders and $4.99 for non-members. This initiative is part of a competitive battle with Walmart to offer consumers the fastest delivery times.
