BlackRock published a research paper titled « The Machine-Native Economy » arguing that broad AI adoption could represent an underappreciated source of demand for digital assets. The rise of AI agents would increase need for machine-native payment infrastructure capable of handling high-frequency, sub-cent transactions operating around the clock, with stablecoins well suited for such use cases. Tokenized computing capacity represents another opportunity, allowing claims on AI processing power to be traded, transferred and used as collateral. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said AI agents will need programmable money rather than traditional banking rails, making crypto potentially more important for the AI economy. Major crypto companies including Coinbase, Circle and OKX are already building tools to support AI agent payments.
